Naseeruddin Shah holds special Barah Aana screening for friends and family

Naseeruddin Shah threw a private screening of his forthcoming movie ‘Barah Aana’ for close friends and family at Fame Adlabs on Friday night.

Seen beaming too were producers Gulia Achilli and Raj Yerasi, director Raja Menon and co-actors of the movie Vijay Raaz and Arjun Mathur, the latter looking suave sporting his long tresses. Tanishtha Chatterjee looked ravishing in a purple outfit. The screening saw a host of actors from the industry turn up to catch this much talked about movie.

With ‘mamu’ Aamir Khan surely giving accolades about the movie since quite some time, how could bhanja Imran Khan not have turned up too. Walking in with girlfriend Avantika, Imran was seen sporting a green and black check shirt with a funky tie that surely made quite a style statement contrary to his casual t-shirt look.

Purab Kohli and Randeep Hooda were seen in a complete complacent and cheerful mood while Paresh Rawal walked in early with wife Swaroop Samopant and sneaked out of the theatre immediately after the screening. Also present were directors Vishal Bharadwaj, Kundan Shah and Jagmohan Mundra.

The guests having a gala time over starters and drinks (yes, inside the multiplex) were having a post party of sorts and needless to say, the topic being the beautiful movie they just witnessed.

Violante Placido (Viola) hails from Lazio in Italy. She is an established actress with several movies to her credit, as well as a talented Singer.

In Barah Aana, Viola plays a firangi girl who hangs out at the restaurant-cafe where Arjun's character (a waiter) works. Having that western friendliness towards all types of people, she chit chats with him, and he starts to think that maybe she likes him. Of course, it doesn't mean anything to her, but for him, she becomes a fantasy. She's very attractive, plus she's a status symbol--the wealthy foreigner. However, unknown to him, she doesn't really have much money... He tries to pursue her, and that leads him in an unexpected direction...

Inspector Ghote. Captain Nemo. Khairuddin Kisti. Dinshaw Sethna. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Widely, wildly different characters, all played with remarkable aplomb by one man – Naseeruddin Shah.

A graduate of the National School of Drama (class of ’73), Naseeruddin Shah has clearly come a long way from Shyam Benegal’s Nishant (1975). Throughout, his journey has been characterized by his willingness to try new things, his aversion to being typecast, his meaningful association with serious theater, and the consistent quality of his performances. From playing heroes in films like Ijaazat (1987), Jalwa (1988) and ¬Hero Hiralal (1988) to supporting roles in star-studded extravaganzas like Ghulami (1985) and Tridev (1989), he manages to bring something special to each role; that little ‘extra’ of subsuming the stamp of his own personality with that of the character.

His involvement with serious theater began with the group he formed in 1977 – Motley Productions – along with Tom Alter and Benjamin Gilani (their first production was from the theater of the absurd – Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot). His recent theater tours have spanned Indian metros, showcasing plays by Ismat Chugtai, Sadat Hassan Manto and more. His Bollywood directorial debut was Yun Hota To Kya Hota (2006), starrying Paresh Rawal, Irfan Khan and Ayesha Takia.

In Barah Aana, he plays Shukla, a car driver, alongside Vijay Raaz and Arjun Mathur. The film’s screening at the Pune International Film Festival this year was met with strong critical acclaim – and popular support as well. As the March 13 launch date approaches, here’s a tip of the hat to a great Indian actor – and by all accounts, a great Indian human being as well!

About the Movie

Barah Aana is a comedy of real life, set in today’s Mumbai. The story revolves around three unlikely friends: a driver (Naseeruddin Shah), a watchman (Vijay Raaz), and a waiter (Arjun Mathur). The driver is an older man, stoic but dependable. The watchman, in his 30s, is a pushover at work but otherwise mischievous. The waiter is a young, swaggering chap, brimming with ambition. Living together, their differing attitudes spark playful banter.

At some point, misfortune befalls the watchman and, due to a series of chance events, he stumbles into a crime. Striking upon a seemingly low-risk way to make good money, and discovering a new sense of self-confidence, he tries to entice the others to join him in a series of such crimes. Cat and mouse games ensue between the three as personalities change, but events soon spiral out of control, leading them in a direction none of them had wanted to take…
